  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0077
    02/08/1924

Kenya Observer. Quite a negative review of de László's portraits at the French Gallery; de László flatters more than John Sargent or Augustus John

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0078
    04/05/1924

Eve, The Lady's Pictorial. The social columnist writes of a visit to de László's studio in Fitzjohn's Avenue and describes the entrance to the studio and the studio itself in some detail, his paintings including new portraits of Lady Londonderry and Princess Andrew of Greece. The columnist also meets an American married to a Russian and the actress, Haidée Wright, all preparing for an Empire pageant (full article is summarised from DLA095-0097)

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0079
    24/08/1924

The Sun. Lord Leverhulme is so satisfied with de László's portrait of him [6043] that he has ordered three replicas [6047][6048][6050]; this differs markedly from the portrait Augustus John painted of Leverhulme, which was famously defaced (text is the same as DLA095-0087).

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0080
    30/07/1924

The Sketch. Detailed description of a party held by the de Lászlós outlining the setting; guests in attendance; music played; dress; decorations worn by the men

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0081

    Sender: Tatlock, Robert Rattray (1837-1934)

    09/07/1924

The Daily Telegraph. Review of de László's exhibition at the French Gallery. De László can make his sitters appear life-life; he is quick and clever with his tools, rather too quick at times. In 'The Drawing Lesson' [11772] he shows how serious his work can become when he steadies his pace; his portrait of The Marquess of Lansdowne [5959] is another where the forms are more fully worked out

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0082
    01/07/1924

Birmingham Post. Very positive review of de László's exhibition at the French Gallery ("wonderful accuracy of draughtsmanship ... scrupulous observation of tone values" etc.)

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0083
    03/07/1924

The Lady. Review of de László's exhibition at the French Gallery. Members of the elite attended the private view in the morning before going to the garden party at Buckingham Palace. A long list of those who attended, with a description of their appearance. Praise for de László as the "ideal painter of lovely womanhood" and "wonderfully successful" in painting men's portraits too

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0084
    05/07/1924

The Illustrated London News. Full page illustration of de László's portrait of the Earl of Balfour [2707] announcing his recently opened exhibition at the French Gallery

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0086

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0087
    24/07/1924

Evening Journal (Ottawa). Lord Leverhulme is so satisfied with de László's portrait of him [6043] that he has ordered three replicas [6047][6048][6050]; this differs markedly from the portrait Augustus John painted of Leverhulme, which was famously decapitated (text is duplicated in DLA095-0079)

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0088
    26/07/1924

The Pioneer. No mention of de László in this review of recent exhibitions

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0089

Unidentified publication. De László has suffered slighting criticisms and patronising commendation. He depicts his sitters in a more generous light than English painters, showing them off at their best. Has often been compared with Lawrence. The next century will rank him with Sargent and Augustus John as one of the three great portraitists of the age

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0090

Simla Times. Review of de László's exhibition at the French Gallery, largely discussing his portrait of the Pope [6690]; compares de László's works with those of Sargent

  • Miscellaneous Press Cuttings 1924, 095-0096
    07/05/1924

Aberdeen Press and Journal. The article throws light on the struggle for lesser-known artists to make a living and the importance of the season's exhibitions for selling their paintings; affirms that Lavery, de László, Sargent and Orpen can charge 1000 to 3000 guineas for a portrait (DLA095-0102 is a press cutting from a different publication, but with the same text)
