Letter is not addressed to de László, but is of some historical interest. The sender, Tivadar Duka (1825-1908), participated in the 1848-9 War of Independence and was General Görgei’s adjutant at the time of the surrender to the Russian army at Világos in October 1849. In this letter, he discusses the delayed publication in The Studio of de László's portrait of General Görgei [5369], which he calls 'a masterpiece'. • Letters 1894-1916 Private, 004-0004

    Sender: East, Sir Alfred (1844-1913)

Recipient: László, Philip Alexius de (1869 - 1937)

    07/09/1907

The painter, Alfred East, writes that he is glad de László has decided to paint the Carnegie family in Florida, which "will serve as a good introduction to the right people in America" (see DLA010-0005 regarding this commission). Letter also concerns a work of de László's that East says cannot be exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists since de László was not then a member (he was elected an Honorary Member the following year); East suggests he sends the work to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Mentions he is looking forward to Cornwall and has been enquiring after a studio (later that year, East and de László travelled together to St. Ives) (DLA004-0004 and DLA004-0005 were previously partial items that have now been merged into DLA004-0004. DLA004-0005 has been deleted, AD 04/03/21)

  • Letters 1894-1916 Private, 004-0006

Recipient: Walston, Sir Charles [formerly Waldstein] (1856-1927)

Letter from American sculptor David Edström to Anglo-American archaeologist, Sir Charles Walston. Edström is interested in de László's portrait of Walston [7626] or [7629]; de László is "the best psychologist of all the modern portrait painters"; will Walston arrange for de László to see his works since "one needs people who know their business"?

  • Letters 1894-1916 Private, 004-0007

    Sender: Cader, Douglas

Recipient: László, Philip Alexius de (1869 - 1937)

    15/12/1915

The sender thanks de László and says his "Uffizzi portrait" [9724] is "extremely interesting", but regrets that the contract for his book stipulates photographs are to be taken by J. Russell & Sons

  • Letters 1894-1916 Private, 004-0008

    Sender: Draper, Herbert James (1863 - 1920)

Recipient: László, Philip Alexius de (1869 - 1937)

    10/01/1915

Letter from the painter, Herbert James Draper, requesting de László's support for election to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Based on the RP's membership lists, it does not appear that Draper was successful in his bid for election
